This year’s Whitley fun day will be held in the grounds of the John Madejski Academy (JMA), Hartland Road, Reading on Saturday 13 July from 12 noon until 4pm.
This new community fun day succeeds the South Reading Churches fun day that used to be held at Rabson’s Rec, just opposite Northumberland Avenue from the JMA. Entrance is free and many of the activities, including live music, will be free as well, although some activities may make a small charge. The JMA head teacher Camilla Thornalley, for example, has agreed to raise money by allowing her pupils, and their parents, to chuck wet sponges at her!
Whitley Community Development Association (WCDA) vice-chair Maria Cox said that she hopes local people running small businesses will want to put up a stall to display the opportunities that exist in Whitley.
Maria Cox said that she expects Reading Scout groups will provide a barbecue, and that students from JMA Performing Arts will entertain attendees. She added that she hoped the Army, Thames Valley Police and the Royal Berkshire Fire and Rescue Service will be on hand to tell young people about career opportunities.
It costs £20 to put up a stall. If you’d like to put up a stall, please contact Maria Cox or Lisa Alloune by email at email@example.com before 30 June.
The money raised will go towards a setting up a new youth café at the South Reading Community Hub on Northumberland Avenue twice a week after school.
