Extract from Burt’s map of Reading during the siege of 1643
Reading changed hands many times during the English Civil War (1642-1649). In 1642, defences were built around the town by the Royalists. There was a line of fortifications to the south of Reading from the River Kennet eastwards to approximately where Crown Street is today (see map).
Corner of Crown Street and Silver Street – outline planning permission recently granted for a development to provide residential care
Outline planning permission was given for a residential institution at the corner of Silver Street and Crown Street (picture above) in December 2015. The proposal from the developer has now been amended and will go to the Planning Applications Committee on 6 April 2016.
On Wednesday 9 December 2015, the Reading Borough Council planning applications committee granted outline planning permission for a residential institution of 86 one-bed and 10 two-bed assisted living units on the corner of Crown Street and Silver Street.
The Planning Applications Committee will consider an outline application to develop the site at the corner of Crown Street and Silver Street as 96 units of assisted living accommodation for older people. The proposed development will have a maximum height of six floors, and be approximately the same height as Crown House on the corner of Crown Street and London Street.
